HONOLULU - It was a night to remember for Rainbow Wahine head coach Dave Shoji and the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball program. No. 9 Hawai'i beat Santa Clara (25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18) on day two of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, giving Shoji his 1,107th win and making him the winningest coach in NCAA Division I women's volleyball history.
Shoji equaled the record mark on Thursday night with a sweep of New Mexico State and tonight surpassed the one previously set by legendary and former UCLA coach Andy Banachowski, who was also in attendance.
Mita Uiato tied a career high with five kills for UH (4-1) who downed Santa Clara (2-3) eight months ago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Emily Hartong posted a match-high 20 kills and Jade Vorster hit an impressive .769 (10-0-13).
Nikki Hess led Santa Clara with 19 kills and Danielle Rottman had a Bronco-high 13 digs.
The 'Bows started the opening set a bit sluggish and found themselves down five points early after a Taylor Milton kill. They would eventually find their stride though and ran off seven straight points to take a 13-10 lead. Hartong drilled three kills during the run with Uiato adding a pair more. Hawai'i pushed the lead to six points but the Broncos rallied and came within one point at 23-22, but it wasn't enough as UH paced to the win.
There was no slow start for the Rainbow Wahine in set two, as UH opened up a 10-4 lead in the blink of an eye. The 'Bows kept it rolling all set and led 23-14 after a pair of kills by Vorster. A solo block by Ashley Kastl clinched the set for Hawai'i who took a two-set lead heading to the break.
Closing out the match would be no easy task. Some early Rainbow Wahine errors and solid defense by the Broncos led to a 14-12 SCU lead. The set remained close until two straight Bronco points gave them a 22-20 advantage. Hartong would tie the set up with a kill but Santa Clara never gave up the lead en route to the 25-23 win.
Set four wasn't pretty either, but the 'Bows found a way this time to seal the win and give their head coach his monumental win.
UH closes the tournament on Saturday against No. 10 UCLA at 7:30 p.m. Santa Clara and New Mexico State will play the opening match of the doubleheader. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
