HONOLULU –
Tai Manu-Olevao had 11 kills and nine digs,
Ali Longo added nine digs of her own, but it wasn't enough as the No. 6 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team suffered a sweep at the hands of the Toyota Auto Body Queenseis in exhibition play on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-18, 26-24, 25-22.
Manu-Olevao led the 'Bows in kills but UH struggled overall on the night, hitting just .110 for the match.
Ashley Kastl had seven kills and four digs, and
Jade Vorster collected three blocks.
Saki Takeda was the hot hitter of the night for the Queenseis. She recorded a match-high 16 kills and swung at a .467 clip. Former 'Bow Kanani Danielson, competing in her first full season with her Japanese pro club, drilled 10 kills and collected four digs for Toyota Auto Body.
The 'Bows struggled in the opening frame, but nearly pulled off wins in sets two and three. UH scored the first three points of the second set only to see the Queenseis rally with five straight points of their own. Both teams would make significant runs during the set with UH grabbing a late 20-18 lead. Danielson kept the Queenseis in the set though, as her three late kills helped tie the score at 22-22. Kills by Takeda and Aya Takeuchi (9 kills, 11 digs) sealed the narrow win for the Queenseis.
Set three featured another competitive battle between the two sides. A Kastl kill gave UH a two-point lead midway through, but back-to-back kills by Aki Fujiwara (5 kills) pushed Toyota ahead 19-17. A Vorster kill gave the 'Bows a late lead but three straight points down the stretch sealed the sweep for Toyota Auto Body.
The Rainbow Wahine return to collegiate action on Friday, Sept. 27, when they host Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 p.m. for their Big West Conference opener.
