Men’s Golf Completes First Day of John Burns Intercollegiate

KAHUKU, O'ahu- The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished the first day of the prestigious John A. Burns Intercollegiate Wednesday at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course.
 
The tournament was held in blistery and rainy conditions that forced some of the nation's top teams and individuals to scramble all day. UH's “A” team currently sits in a tie for eighth place after shooting a first round 302 while the “B”  team is in a tie for 12th place after shooting a 309.
 
Top-ranked California currently has the lead in the 16-team field after shooting a 4-under 284 but No. 5 New Mexico is hot on their heels only three strokes behind the lead at 287.
 
Individually, California's Joel Stalter currently sits on top of the standings after shooting a 5-under 67. New Mexico's Gavin Green and Arizona's Erik Oja sit in second and third place, respectively, with Green one stroke behind the lead and Oja two strokes back. Cal's Michael Kim, ranked No. 3 nationally, shot 2-over 74 while the seveth-ranked golfer, Kevin Penner from UNLV shot 4-over 76.
 
For the Warriors, freshman Scott Yamashita had a stellar day shooting a team-low 1-under 71 and is currently sitting in a tie for sixth place, only four strokes out of the lead with two rounds to play.
 
Senior Cory Oride is tied for 23rd after shooting a 74; however he is only seven strokes from the lead going into Thursday's second round. Sophomore Brian Lee shot a first round 79 and currently is in a tie for 62nd. Junior David Saka shot a 78 and sits in a tie for 57th while fellow junior Nainoa Calip shot an 83 and is tied for 83rd.
 
Among the “B” team, seniors Henry Park led the way with a 3-over 75. Junior Thomas Yamashita (83), sophomores Ryan Kuroiwa (75) and Reo Saito (76), and freshman Justin Chu (84) round out the “B” squad.
