HONOLULU – Just one day after its shocking defeat to UC Santa Barbara, the fifth-ranked University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team regrouped to sweep Cal Poly on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.
Emily Hartong had a match-high 11 kills to lead a Rainbow Wahine team that hit nearly .300 points better (.405) than a day ago.
Nikki Taylor was stellar on the evening as well, ripping 10 kills while committing just one error (.600).
The 'Bows also sported brand new pink uniforms in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Chelsea Hardin had nine kills to lead the Mustangs, who fell to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the Big West Conference. Taylor Gruenewald added eight kills.
The opening set saw UH (16-2, 5-1 BWC) go on an early 6-1 run and take a five-point lead. Hartong did the work in the early going with five quick kills. The 'Bows kept the momentum going and extended the lead to 18-11 off kills from Taylor and
Kalei Adolpho (3 kills, 1 blk). The 'Bows maintained the advantage and iced the win after a thunderous kill from
Tai Manu-Olevao (8 kills, 8 digs) and two more from Taylor.
The 'Bows put together another comfortable win in the second set to take a two-set lead heading to the break. UH again grabbed an early five-point lead, and later
Jade Vorster (7 kills, 2 blks) turned it on with a pair of kills to give the 'Bows an 18-10 lead. A Hartong ace and another Taylor kill put the set on ice for the 'Bows.
The Rainbow Wahine dominated set three from the get-go to end the night for the Mustangs. A 9-0 run put the 'Bows up 12-2 and Cal Poly on its heels, and Hawai'i emptied its bench and cruised to the sweep.
Mita Uiato added 11 digs, one off of her season high.
The 'Bows next play their annual alumnae match on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
