Men’s Golf Moves Up At Burns Intercollegiate

Round 2 Results

KAHUKU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot an even par 288 and moved up to ninth place after Round 2 of the 35th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Thursday, at the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course. UH's “B” team is in 17th place.
 
UH's “A” team were led by junior T.J. Kua and freshman Nainoa Calip, who both shot 3-under 69. Kua is tied for ninth place overall with a 2-under 142 after rounds of 73 and 69. Calip is tied for 23rd after firing an opening round 76. Kua had four birdies and one bogey in his round while Calip posted five birdies and two bogeys.
 
Sophomore Cory Oride bounced back in a big way, shooting even par 72, one day after posting an 89. His round included three birdies and he played his last four holes at 2-under par. Senior Kamden Brakel fired a 6-over 78 for a two-day total of 151 (73-78) while freshman David Saka shot 82 for a 159 total (77-82).
 
Leading UH's “B” team for the second straight day was freshman Tommy Yamashita, who shot a steady 2-over 74 for a two-day total of 149 (75-74). Junior Jared Sawada had an up-and-down round that included three birdies, five bogeys, and a double bogey in his 4-over 76. Also competing were sophomores Henry Park (76-80=156) and Alex Chu (81-82=163), and senior Chris Estes (87)
 
California, ranked No. 23, in the latest national rankings, leads the tournament by eight strokes over Texas A&M after a second round 274. Texas A&M is second after a 282 in Round 2 followed by Virginia (294-283=577), Nevada (290-287=577), and SMU (289-291=580).
 
Individually, Texas A&M's Conrad Shindler shot a 4-under 68 for the second straight day and leads the tournament by one stroke by California's Max Homa and Eric Mina, the latter of whom shot the low round of the day at 7-under 65.
 
The tournament concludes Friday at the Fazio Course.
