LAS VEGAS, Nev. – In the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, the No. 3 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Fresno State in five sets, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-11, 15-10.
Kanani Danielson had a match-high 24 kills to propel UH (27-1) into Wednesday's final against New Mexico State.
Jane Croson recovered from a sluggish start to post 13 kills and 14 digs, and
Emily Maeda recorded 13 kills after spelling starter
Elizabeth Blake.
Brittany Hewitt was steady throughout the match, posting 11 kills for a .579 attack percentage. Kalei Adolpho provided a lift off the bench with six blocks, all in the final two sets.
Korrin Wild and Brianna Clark each led the Bulldogs with 18 kills.
The Rainbow Wahine did not turn things around right away in the third set. Kills by Maci Murdock (14 kills) and Wild gave FSU an early 6-3 lead. The 'Bows trailed 14-10 before a pair of
Emily Hartong kills helped bring them level at 15-15, then Hartong added another to increase Hawai'i's lead to 21-18. Hartong finished the match with nine kills, six digs, and five blocks.
After a convincing set four win, the 'Bows edged Fresno in a nail biting final set. Adolpho imposed her will defensively to the tune of four blocks in the fifth set alone. With the 'Bows leading 10-9, Danielson put the team on her back and recorded four more kills to capture the victory for Hawai'i.
Hawai'i and New Mexico State play for the tournament title Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT) in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPNU.
