No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Beat San Jose State; Shoji One Win Away From 1,000

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball swept San Jose State 25-12, 25-11, 25-17 Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center, notching win No. 999 in head coach Dave Shoji's career.
 
Shoji moves one-win closer to reaching the 1,000th win milestone, and will have a chance to earn the victory Wednesday at the Stan Sheriff Center against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m.
 
UH improves to 15-2 on the season and 6-0 in WAC play. The Rainbow Wahine have also won 11 straight matches, with 10 of those matches being sweeps.
 
Friday night, Kanani Danielson had a match-high 11 kills and hit .450 over three sets. She also tied a career-high with five blocks. Freshman Brittany Hewitt played two strong sets, recording eight kills and six blocks.
 
Junior Dani Mafua set the balanced offensive attack to a .519 hitting percentage in the first set and spread the ball around after that. Aneli Cubi-Otineru had eight kills and hit .400 and Amber Kaufman had six kills.
 
The Rainbow Wahine took an early lead and never looked back in the first set, winning 25-12. Hewitt led the way with five kills on five swings and added three blocks in the set. Kaufman, Danielson and Cubi-Otineru each added three kills. Mafua set the offense with 14 assists as UH hit .519 as a team.
 
UH once again jumped in front of San Jose State and won the set 25-11. Danielson had five kills and Hewitt added three kills and three blocks. As a team UH hit .345 and held San Jose State to a -.088 hitting percentage.
 
In the third set, several players came off the bench to lead UH to a 25-17 win. Stephanie Brandt had 12 assists and three service aces and Corinne Cascioppo and Catherine Fowler had one kill.
