No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Cruise Past Nevada In Straight Sets

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept Nevada 25-12, 25-17, 25-16 Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The win extends the Rainbow Wahine's win streak to 10 matches.
 
UH improved to 14-2 on the season and 5-0 in Western Athletic Conference play with the win. The Rainbow Wahine continue WAC play Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center against San Jose State at 7 p.m.
 
The win also gives head coach Dave Shoji his 998th career victory, just two wins shy of reaching the 1,000 victory milestone.
 
Offensively senior Amber Kaufman led the way, recording a career-high 15 kills, hitting .700 and adding two blocks. Kaufman had 15 kills on 20 swings with one error.
 
Sophomore Kanani Danielson had 12 kills, eight digs and two blocks and sophomore Stephanie Ferrell had nine kills and three digs. Dani Mafua set the offense to a .381 hitting percentage for the match, recording 41 assists.
 
Starting a different lineup for only the second time this season, Stephanie Brandt recorded eight digs as a defensive specialist and Corinne Cascioppo had four kills on the outside.
 
The Rainbow Wahine to a 9-2 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-12 win. Kaufman led the way with four kills and one solo block in the set. Danielson had three kills and four digs and Ferrell had two kills. UH hit .348 as a team in the set, while recording three blocks and holding Nevada to a -.111 hitting percentage.
 
In the second set, UH took and early lead and won 25-17. Kaufman and Ferrell each had five kills in the set, while Danielson had four kills. Brittany Hewitt and Cascioppo each had two kills. Mafua set the offense with 18 assists and led UH to a .424 hitting percentage in the set.
 
UH went back-and-forth with Nevada early in the third set, but pulled away with a 25-16 victory. Kaufman had six kills in the set and Danielson had five kills as UH hit .357 as a team.
