NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - University of Hawai`i senior pole vaulter
Patricia Gauthier set a new school record on the first day of the NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championships Friday at Matador Track Complex. The senior placed seventh overall with a personal best jump of 13-3.75 (4.06m).
Gauthier was one of three UH athletes competing in the pole vault. Samantha Weaver cleared her first two heights of 12-0 (3.66m) and 12-6 (3.81m) and placed 17th. Jessica Custance cleared 12-0 (3.66m) and tied for 21st. Earlier this season, both Gauthier and Custance became the first athletes in school history to clear four meters.
Gauthier's seventh place finish scored two points for UH in the team standings.
A pair of Rainbow Wahine competed in the discus but neither placed in the top eight, the position needed to score team points. Alana Faagai placed 15th overall with a throw of 149-1 (45.45m) while Brittani Daniels fouled. Both Faagai and Daniels were competing in their first NCAA Regional.
The second and final day of the West Regionals on Saturday will feature four more Rainbow Wahine in action. Amber Kaufman and Emily Sheppard will compete in the high jump, Annett Wichmann in the javelin, and Meghan Weaver in the shot put.
Two weeks ago, Kaufman set a new UH record (6-0.5/1.84m) and captured gold at the Western Athletic Conference Championship, which qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Sheppard's jump of 5-11.25 (1.81m) ranks in the Top 10 nationally and earned her silver behind Kaufman.
A school record 10 UH athletes qualified for this year's regionals.
