UH Track Picks Up Three Bronzes At WAC Championships

BOISE, Idaho - University of Hawai`i women's track and field team grabbed three bronze medals on the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships Friday at Bronco Stadium which were held in blistering 90 degree conditions on the track.

The Rainbow Wahine continue to hold on to second place in the team standings behind leader Idaho, who accumulated 88 points through the first seven events. UH has 38.5 points followed by Nevada (33), Fresno State (29.5), Louisiana Tech (28), Utah State (23), New Mexico State (20.5) and Boise State (12.5).

Senior shot putter Meghan Weaver took third with a throw of 50-10 (15.49m), adding to her silver at WAC indoor. Weaver will have a chance to add to her total as she's entered in both the discus and hammer throw on Saturday.

Long distance runner Chantelle Wilder placed third in the 10,000- meter run with a strong finish, crossing the finish line in 38:49.71. Wilder will also get a chance to add to her total in both the 1500-meter and 5,000-meter runs on Saturday.

Multi-event athlete Annett Wichmann competed in three events on Friday - the javelin, long jump, and shot put, the latter of which she raced back and forth from one event to the next. The Jena, Germany native won bronze in the javelin with a throw of 149-7 (45.59m). After a short break, Wichmann was back on the runway for the long jump and in the circle for the shot. She heaved 45-1 (13.74m), just missing the top eight and placed 10th in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.5 (5.50m).

"I'm pleased with our effort and where we are in the standings but we all know that the Louisiana Tech train coming down the track with the sprint tomorrow," UH head coach Carmyn James said. "We'll pick up more points tomorrow with the long throws and high jump. We also have athletes in the 5K and 800 and we'll contend both relays.

"Our long jumpers did well even though none advanced to the event finals. Annett (Wichmann) and Emily (Sheppard) both bettered their marks from yesterday's hep and Mary (Reeds) had a huge PB and it was nice way for her to end her career."

Lousiana Tech is the three-time defending outdoor champion. In March, the Lady Techsters rallied on the final day to capture the WAC Indoor Championships, edging UH by one point.

Also on Friday, the Rainbow Wahine scored 7.5 points in the pole vault as Samantha Weaver finished fourth and Jessica Custance tied for sixth. Weaver just missed clearing four- meters and bowed out at 12-7.5 (3.85m) while Custance cleared 12-1.5 (3.70m) in the swirling winds at Bronco Stadium.

Freshman Mariana Monasi also scored one team point finishing eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:02.51.

The meet concludes on Saturday with the remainder of the event finals. The Rainbow Wahine are looking to better last year's sixth place finish.
