BOISE, Idaho - University of Hawai`i women's track and field
team grabbed three bronze medals on the third day of the
Western Athletic Conference Championships Friday at Bronco
Stadium which were held in blistering 90 degree conditions on
the track.
The Rainbow Wahine continue to hold on to second place in the
team standings behind leader Idaho, who accumulated 88 points
through the first seven events. UH has 38.5 points followed by
Nevada (33), Fresno State (29.5), Louisiana Tech (28), Utah
State (23), New Mexico State (20.5) and Boise State (12.5).
Senior shot putter Meghan Weaver took third with a throw of
50-10 (15.49m), adding to her silver at WAC indoor. Weaver will
have a chance to add to her total as she's entered in both the
discus and hammer throw on Saturday.
Long distance runner Chantelle Wilder placed third in the 10,000-
meter run with a strong finish, crossing the finish line in 38:49.71.
Wilder will also get a chance to add to her total in both the
1500-meter and 5,000-meter runs on Saturday.
Multi-event athlete Annett Wichmann competed in three events
on Friday - the javelin, long jump, and shot put, the latter of
which she raced back and forth from one event to the next. The
Jena, Germany native won bronze in the javelin with a throw of
149-7 (45.59m). After a short break, Wichmann was back on the
runway for the long jump and in the circle for the shot. She
heaved 45-1 (13.74m), just missing the top eight and placed
10th in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.5 (5.50m).
"I'm pleased with our effort and where we are in the standings
but we all know that the Louisiana Tech train coming down the
track with the sprint tomorrow," UH head coach Carmyn James
said. "We'll pick up more points tomorrow with the long throws
and high jump. We also have athletes in the 5K and 800 and
we'll contend both relays.
"Our long jumpers did well even though none advanced to the
event finals. Annett (Wichmann) and Emily (Sheppard) both
bettered their marks from yesterday's hep and Mary (Reeds) had
a huge PB and it was nice way for her to end her career."
Lousiana Tech is the three-time defending outdoor champion. In
March, the Lady Techsters rallied on the final day to capture the
WAC Indoor Championships, edging UH by one point.
Also on Friday, the Rainbow Wahine scored 7.5 points in the
pole vault as Samantha Weaver finished fourth and Jessica
Custance tied for sixth. Weaver just missed clearing four-
meters and bowed out at 12-7.5 (3.85m) while Custance cleared
12-1.5 (3.70m) in the swirling winds at Bronco Stadium.
Freshman Mariana Monasi also scored one team point
finishing eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of
13:02.51.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the remainder of the event
finals. The Rainbow Wahine are looking to better last year's sixth
place finish.
