HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team held its final preparation for the upcoming Western Athletic Conference Championships by hosting the sixth Sunset Meet Saturday at Cooke Field.
Two-sport athlete Amber Kaufman equaled her seasonal best in the high jump, clearing 5-10.75 (1.80m). Kaufman, who is a starter on the nationally ranked Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, also competed in the javelin for the first time in her young UH career and threw 98-7 (30.04m).
Multi-athlete Annett Wichmann competed in three events as she prepares for her defense of the WAC heptathlon title, which she is the two-time defending champion. The Jena, Germany native competed and placed first or second in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, and shot put.
The Rainbow Wahine depart for Boise, Idaho, site of this year's WAC Championship, on Wednesday. UH will send its largest contingent to the competition. Eighteen athletes will attempt to capture the school's first-ever conference title in the sport. In February, the UH indoor team just missed out on winning the title, falling one point short of champion Louisiana Tech.
Wichmann and Emily Sheppard will lead things off for UH in the heptathlon, which begins on Wednesday. Wichmann is the two-time defending champion and has already qualified for her second NCAA Outdoor Championship in the event. Sheppard will be competing in only her second heptathlon of her career.
