Rainbow Wahine Lose First MPSF Match, 10-9 To Stanford

HONOLULU - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team suffered its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season, 10-9, to No. 2 Stanford Monday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Juniors Lisa van Raalte and Angela Turnbull led the Rainbow Wahine with three goals each. Freshman Carmen Eggens added two goals and sophomore Leonie Van Der Molen scored one goal.

Freshman Serena Bredin had six saves in goal for UH, which also had its six-match win streak snapped.

Hawai`i led by one goal at the half after a touch-pass from Saara Majuri to Eggens. In the third quarter, Van Der Molen scored her first goal with 4:12 left to give the Rainbow Wahine a 6-5 advantage. Moments later, van Raalte scored her third goal of the match with one second left giving Hawai`i a 7-6 lead.

The Cardinal knotted the score at 8-8 with 1:17 left sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Stanford scored first on a 6-5 advantage. However, Hawai`i responded with a goal by Turnbull from six meters out, tying the score at 9-9 - the ninth tie of the match.

At 2:13 in the second overtime period, Stanford scored what turned out to be the final goal of the match when Kira Hillman found the net. The Cardinal held off the Rainbow Wahine the rest of the way.

The biggest lead by either team throughout the entire match was one point. Hawai`i hasn't beaten Stanford in its 20-match history which began in 1998.

The Rainbow Wahine will next host No. 1 UCLA in an MPSF match on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
