Wichmann, the defending WAC heptathlon and indoor pentathlon champion, set a new school record with 3,337 day one points. The Jena, Germany native, placed first in the high jump (5-10, 1.78m) and shot put (42-8.25, 13.01m) events, second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.73), and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Wichmann's high jump mark was a new personal best.
Utah State's Carrie Yost is in second (3,129 points) followed by Idaho's Molly Burt (3,005).
Earlier this season, Wichmann posted an NCAA provisional mark and new school record 5,413 points at the Mt. SAC Heptathlon. After day one of that meet, Wichmann accumulated 3,200 points.
Gilbert is eight points off of her day one personal best after totaling 2,765 points. The Clovis, Calif., native tied her heptathlon event bests in both the high jump (5-8.75, 1.75m) and shot put (34-5.25, 10.51m), finishing second and fifth, respectively. Gilbert also placed ninth in both the 100-meter hurdles (16.40) and 200-meter dash (28.14).
The heptathlon concludes on Thursday. Preliminaries for the other events begin on Friday with the finals scheduled for Saturday.
