HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team hosted its final home meet of the season, Saturday, with the fifth Sunset Meet at Cooke Field. Competing in their final home meet of their collegiate careers, seniors
Novelle Murray,
Sharlene Carillo, and
Ashley Monfort, posted personal bests in their respective events.
Among the notable performances, Murray, an NCAA Regional qualifier in both the discus and hammer, shattered her previous best in the hammer with a monster throw of 196-0 (59.73m). That mark, which was also a new Cooke Field record, was nearly eight feet better than her previous best and school record toss of 188-5. Her mark also ranks as the second best in the Western Athletic Conference this season and would place her among the top 10 in the west region had it occurred against collegiate competition. Murray also competed in the discus and threw 175-7 (53.53m).
Monfort and Carillo both set huge PRs in the 800-meter run. Monfort chopped more than a minute off of her previous best, clocking in at 2:15.87 while Carillo knocked off 40 seconds in her 2:16.51 performance.
Junior Annett Wichmann, who already qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the javelin, threw another qualifying mark of 147-0 (44.80m).
Sophomore Emily Sheppard, a regional qualifier in the high jump, reached that standard again with a mark of 5-8.75. In addition, the Vancouver, British Columbia native, posted a seasonal-best 18-1.25 (5.52m) in the long jump.
The Rainbow Wahine next head to Fresno, Calif., for the WAC Championship, May 9-13. The meet is the final competition before the NCAA West Regionals, May 25-26, in Eugene, Ore.
