UH In Third After Day Three Of WAC Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team completed day three of the Western Athletic Conference Championship, Friday, by picking up 24 more team points, one medal - a bronze by senior Novelle Murray, and one NCAA Regional qualifier - pole vaulter Jessica Trujillo. The Rainbow Wahine are currently in third place with 36 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field.

Murray, a two-time WAC champion in the discus, heaved a personal best 46-9.5 (14.26m) in the shot put event to earn six team points. The Surrey, British Columbia native just missed out on the NCAA Regional standard by one and a half feet. Meghan Weaver, a junior from London, Ontario, placed fifth after a throw of 45-7.75 (13.91m).

Junior Annett Wichmann, who one day earlier captured her second consecutive WAC heptathlon title, placed fourth in the javelin after a seasonal-best 147-6 (44.95m). On Saturday, the Jena, Germany native, will compete in the high jump, an event in which she ranked among the top jumpers in the WAC.

The Rainbow Wahine picked up four team points in the pole vault. Trujillo, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, placed sixth with a seasonal-best mark of 12-5.5 (3.80m), and in the process, became the seventh UH athlete to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Samantha Weaver finished eighth with a jump of 11-9.75 (3.60m).

Sophomore Emily Sheppard, the reigning WAC high jump champion, took sixth in the long jump after a leap of 17-11 (5.46m). Sheppard will defend her high jump title on Saturday.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase final, Chantelle Laan placed seventh. The junior from London, Ontario, crossed the finish line in 11:20.86. Earlier in the day, she was one of 12 athletes to advance to the 1500-meter run finals, after a prelim time of 4:42.80.

Most of the day's action was preliminary events and a number of Rainbow Wahine qualified for their respective event finals. Most notably, senior Sharlene Carillo chopped off nearly a minute from her 800-meter personal-best with a time of 2:15.53 to qualify along with teammate Ashley Monfort (2:16.81). Just last week, Carillo and Monfort set new PRs in the 800 at the UH Sunset Meet at Cooke Field.

Hurdler Thalia Amanakis qualified for two events finals, the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, after posting times of 14.30 and 1:01.64, respectively.

Idaho leads the women's standings with 73 points heading into the final day of competition followed by Nevada (49), Hawai`i (36), Utah State (31), Fresno State (29), Louisiana Tech (24), Boise State (22), and New Mexico State (9). The championship concludes on Saturday with a full-field of event finals beginning at 12:30 p.m. PDT with the field events and 5:00 p.m. PDT for the track events.
