FRESNO, Calif. - University of Hawai`i junior
Annett Wichmann continued her dominance in Western Athletic Conference multi-events by capturing her second consecutive heptathlon title, Thursday, on day two of the WAC Outdoor Championship at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field. Wichmann set a new UH school record with an NCAA automatic qualification mark of 5,557 points.
The junior from Jena, Germany, shattered the previous record, which she held, by 144 points. Most importantly, she gains automatic entry into the NCAA Outdoor Championship next month and becomes the first UH athlete to participate in two national championships. Wichmann, who earlier this year captured the WAC indoor pentathlon title, is now a perfect three-for-three in conference multi-events since joining the Rainbow Wahine last year. Last May, Wichmann rallied in the final two events to win her first WAC heptathlon at Cooke Field.
On Thursday, she took first place in both the javelin (137-8, 41.97m) and 800-meter run (2:19.97) events and finished second in the long jump (17-11.25, 5.47m). Her 2,220 points on day two was also a new school record. Wichmann led after day one with a school-record 3,337 points. Her 5,557-point total currently ranks 10th nationally.
Also competing in the heptathlon was Mallory Gilbert, who finished seventh with 4,439 points. The senior from Clovis, Calif., had the third-highest long jump with a personal heptathlon-event best of 17-7.5 (5.37m). She also placed fifth in the javelin (102-1, 31.12m) and 10th in the 800-meter run (2:45.40).
After two days of competition, the Rainbow Wahine stand in second place in the team standings with 12 points, trailing Idaho (15), who had three athletes place in the top eight in the heptathlon.
The WAC Championship continues throughout the weekend. A full field of preliminary events are scheduled for Friday with the finals set for Saturday.
