LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team completed day two of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, its final mainland competition before the Western Athletic Conference Championship, Saturday, at Triton Stadium.
The highlight of the day for the Rainbow Wahine was senior Novelle Murray's performance in the discus. The Surrey, British Columbia native, won the event with a season-best throw of 178-10 (54.50m). Freshman Alana Faagai placed 19th with a seasonal best 149-7 (45.60m).
Murray, who last week ranked third in Trackwire's Dandy Dozen list, will likely move up from seventh in the national statistics.
Three UH athletes competed in the 800-meter run led by junior Sharlene Carillo's 13th place finish at 2:18.63. Sophomore McKenzie Wallace ran a personal best 2:22.55.
Junior Chantelle Laan placed 10th in the 1500-meter run at 4:41.30 and ran a PR 11:14.88 in the 3000-meter steeplechase for fifth place.
Among other UH athletes, Mary Reeds posted a new PR in the triple jump (34-9.5, 10.60m), Annett Wichmann finished 10th in the javelin (142-5, 43.41m) and 13th in the long jump (17-9, 5.41m), and Thalia Amanakis placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.54) and 20th in the 200-meter dash (25.65).
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the fifth and final Sunset Meet, May 5, at Cooke Field.
