AZUSA, Calif. - University of Hawai`i heptathletes
Annett Wichmann and
Mallory Gilbert used monster second day point totals to eclipse their personal bests, in their respective multi-event competitions, Thursday, at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Stadium. Wichmann broke her own school record in the process and likely earned another spot into the NCAA Championship.
The Jena, Germany native, set two new heptathlon PRs en route to an NCAA provisional 5,413 point total and fourth place finish at the Mt. SAC heptathlon. Her performance was 66 points better than last year's Western Athletic Conference gold medal run. Her then-school record total of 5,347 points at the event was the 16th best in the country last year as she became only the second Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the national meet.
Wichmann set heptathlon personal bests in two of the three events. She posted marks of 18-0.5 in the long jump and 140-3 in the javelin. Her day two point total of 2,213 points was also a new PR.
Participating in the California Invitational heptathlon, Gilbert bested her previous high by more than 200 points and finished 10th overall with 4,582 points. The Clovis, Calif., native, posted heptathlon PRs in the long jump (16-6.5) and 800-meter run (2:35.81). In addition, her second day point total of 1,806 points was also a new personal best. Gilbert also recorded a mark of 104-9 in the javelin.
While Wichmann and Gilbert were competing in Azusa, Calif., the rest of the Rainbow Wahine are set to participate at the Cal State Los Angeles Twilight Open at Jesse Owens Track.
