STANFORD, Calif. - University of Hawai`i women's track and field athlete
Novelle Murray qualified for the NCAA Regionals in her second event this season, after her performance in the hammer throw on day two of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. At the two-day meet held at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field, three UH athletes posted regional qualifying marks.
Murray, who earlier this season met the regional standard in the discus, threw the hammer 184-1 (56.11m) to finish sixth. Also competing in the event was junior Meghan Weaver, who heaved 146-7 (44.68m). Weaver also competed in the shot put and threw a seasonal-best 45-6.25 (13.87m).
Junior Chantelle Laan posted a personal-best in the 1500-meter run, clocking in at 4:38.29.
Last season, three UH athletes qualified for five regional events, including Weaver, who became the first Rainbow Wahine to qualify in three separate events. So far this season, four UH athletes have qualified for five events. In addition to Murray, other Rainbow Wahine qualifiers are Emily Sheppard (high jump), Mallory Gilbert (high jump), and Annett Wichmann (javelin).
The school record for regional qualifiers is six athletes during the 2005 season.
UH returns to Honolulu before departing again for the mainland for four meets beginning with the Mt. SAC Multi-Events, April 11-12. Hawai`i will also compete in the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational, April 12, Meet of Champions, April 13, and the Mt. SAC Relays, April 13-15.
