STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team qualified one more athlete to this year's NCAA Regionals after the first day of competition at the Stanford Invitational, Friday, at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The annual event features more than 5,000 collegiate, high school, and open athletes, including 14 members of the Rainbow Wahine track team.
Annett Wichmann became the fourth Rainbow Wahine to qualify for the NCAA Regionals with a monster throw in the javelin of 145-5 (44.32m) to win her section. Her mark was a seasonal-best and a modern day UH record. The junior also placed fourth in her section in the shot put with a heave of 42-0.75 (12.82m).
Emily Sheppard matched her Regional qualifying mark in the high jump, with a leap of 5-8.75. That mark placed her second in her section in which Mallory Gilbert also competed and finished third with a jump of 5-7.75. In addition, Gilbert ran a lifetime best in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.35 seconds.
Three UH athletes competed in the Section "B" discus led by Alana Faagai's eighth place finish (147-1, 44.83m). Brittani Daniels threw a personal-best 138-6 (42.22m).
In the 800-meter run, Sharlene Carillo ran a lifetime best of 2:17.33, chopping nearly a minute off of her previous best, while Ashley Monfort ran a seasonal-best of 2:17.17.
Sophomore Thalia Amanakis competed in two hurdle events, placing 28th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.82) and 13th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.33).
The meet concludes on Saturday with a full day of competition. Senior Novelle Murray will compete in the top sections of the discus and hammer throw events.
The Rainbow Wahine will then take the next week off before making their third road trip of the outdoor season beginning with the Mt. SAC Multi-Events, April 11-12. UH will also compete in the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational, April 12, Meet of Champions, April 13, and the Mt. SAC Relays, April 13-15.
