Rainbow Warriors Come Up Short Against No. 38 California

HONOLULU - On the final day of the 2007 Aloha Invitational, the University of Hawai`i men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-2 decision to 38th-ranked California, Monday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors fell to 4-9 on the season, while the Bears improved to 10-6.

UH won two of the six singles matches. Taking home victories for Hawai`i were freshman Andreas Weber and sophomore Sascha Heinemann. Weber won an impressive 6-2, 6-2 decision over No. 20 Pierre Mouillon at the No. 1 position. Weber, ranked No. 60, improved to 19-6 overall, 10-2 in dual matches.

Heinemann rolled over California's Tyler Browne at the No. 2 court, 6-3, 7-6(3). Heinemann, ranked No. 81, improved to 18-5 overall and 9-2 in dual matches. Senior Derrick Lajola lost two tough sets against Eoin Heavey at the No. 3 position, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Spencer Mendoza dropped a heartbreaking three-set match to Kallim Stewart, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 court.

With the decision already decided, the Bears and Rainbow Warriors decided not to play doubles.

Hawai`i will next play two matches on the road against Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly beginning on April 2.
