NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's track and field team posted two NCAA Regional qualification marks and nine personal bests at the Cal State Northridge Spring Break Open, Wednesday, at Matador Track. The meet was UH's first mainland competition for the 2007 outdoor track and field season.
Senior Novelle Murray qualified for her fourth NCAA Regional with a throw of 170-4 (51.92m) in the discus. Murray, the school's record holder in the event, is also the two-time Western Athletic Conference champion. The Surrey, British Columbia native, competed in two other events, taking second in the shot put with a huge personal best throw of 45-2.25 (13.77) and in the hammer throw (176-10, 53.90m).
Sophomore Emily Sheppard qualified for her second NCAA Regional in the high jump after clearing 5-8.75. That mark, which tied her personal best, was the best mark of the day.
Thalia Amanakis, a sophomore from Sydney, Australia, set two new personal bests in both hurdle events. She completed the 100-meter hurdles in 14.48 seconds, chopping nearly two-tenths of a second off of her previous best. In the 400-meter hurdles, she crossed the finish line in 1:01.30, the third-best mark in school history.
A number of other Rainbow Wahine were in action on Wednesday including junior Aileen Ramos, who set two new personal bests in the 100-meter (13.52) and 200-meter (27.78) dashes.
UH will next compete in the Northridge Invitational beginning Friday, March 16. The meet continues with a full-field of events on Saturday, March 17 at Matador Track on the campus of Cal State Northridge.
