LAIE, O'ahu - The Hawai'i women's cross country team captured the season-opening Chaminade Invitational, Saturday morning, with a dominant performance as three runners placed in the Top 10. Redshirt junior
Chantelle Laan took home the individual title by completing the 5K race near the Brigham Young-Hawai'i campus in 19:02.08.
The Rainbow Wahine (48 points) edged Hawai'i-Hilo (53), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (61), Hawai'i Pacific (70) and host Chaminade (105). Laan, who redshirted last season, captured her second career title and first since winning the San Francisco Invitational during her freshman campaign.
Also finishing in the Top 10 for UH were newcomer Tava Tedesco (20:13.80, 4th) and senior Sharlene Carillo (20:31.30, 7th). Senior Michel Wilson (21:27.00, 14th) and Ashley Monfort (23:00.20, 22nd) were the team's other qualifiers.
Laan's finishing time was more than a minute faster than her nearest competitor, BYUH's Diana Choi (20:07.10).
The Rainbow Wahine take the next week off before hosting the Big Wave Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The women's 5K race begins at 8:00 a.m.
