SACRAMENTO, Calif. - University of Hawai`i sophomore
Annett Wichmann is currently in 16th place after the first day of the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Friday, at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex. Her day one total of 3,150 points is 58 points behind her school record pace at the Western Athletic Conference Championship four weeks ago.
Wichmann had a rough start, placing 27th of 28 athletes in the 100m hurdles. After one fall-start caused a slow take-off - a second would mean disqualification - her finishing time of 15.24 seconds was nearly half a second off of her personal best.
The Jena, Germany native rebounded in the high jump, clearing a seasonal-best 5-6.5 (1.69m) to tie for second in her flight and 12th overall.
Standing in 21st place heading into the shot put, Wichmann moved up to ninth after a school heptathlon event record heave of 45-9 (13.94m). She won the event by nearly two feet over her closest competitor, Virginia Tech's Saskia Triesscheijn (43-10, 13.36m).
Wichmann finished the day by clocking in at 27.04 seconds in the 200m and moved down to 16th, the same as her national ranking heading into the championship.
USC's Jacquelyn Johnson leads the competition with 3,526 points, followed by Missouri State's Tracy Partain (3,516) and the Washington State twins of Julie and Diana Pickler, who posted identical scores of 3,451 points. Utah State's Lacey Hulbert, whom Wichmann rallied to beat at the WAC Championship, stands in 10th with 3,203 points.
The heptathlon concludes on Saturday with the final three events - long jump, javelin, and 800m. CBS will televise two and a half hours of live coverage of the NCAA Championship beginning at 9:30 a.m.
