DALLAS - University of Hawai`i Warrior center
Samson Satele is on watch list for the 2006 Outland Trophy, the Football Writers Association of America announced today. Satele is one of 54 standout linemen from around the country nominated.
Satele (6-3, 311, Senior) is pegged to start at center for the Warriors in 2006 after serving as starting guard for the past two seasons. The graduate of Kailua High School on Oahu was a first team all-WAC pick in 2005 after posting a team-high 32 knockdowns and giving up two sacks in 578 pass attempts. The Kaneohe, Oahu, resident is also on the preseason watch list for the 2006 Rotary Lombardi Award and Rimington Trophy.
The Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, is awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
The 2006 Outland Trophy announcement will be on December 7 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb.
Minnesota center Greg Eslinger won the 2005 Outland Trophy.
Additional Outland Trophy candidates may be added during the course of the season. Tackles, guards and centers are eligible for consideration.
