UH Finishes 31st At NCAA West Regionals

PROVO, Utah - A pair of University of Hawai`i athletes were in action on the final day of the 2006 NCAA West Regional Championship, Saturday, at Clarence F. Robison Track Complex on the Brigham Young Complex.

Sophomore Meghan Weaver, who competed in the shot put on Friday, placed 20th in her first regional hammer competition. The London, Ontario native threw 174-5. USC's Eva Orban won the competition with a regional record 226-8.

Later in the day, Weaver competed in the discus and finished 18th. Weaver, who became the first UH athlete to qualify for the regionals in three field events, heaved 142-1. Kate Huchinson earned a spot to the NCAA Championship with a throw of 181-6.

In the pole vault, junior Patricia Gauthier finished in a six-way tie for 18th place. The Ottawa, Ontario native cleared 12-6, and just missed her next height of 12-11.75, which would have tied her personal best. UCLA's Chelsea Johnson defended her regional title with a height of 13-11.75.

With only three athletes competing in five events, UH placed 30th in the team competition. Stanford and USC shared top honors with 94 total points.

UH sophomore Annett Wichmann is assured of a spot to the NCAA Championship in two weeks. Wichmann, who totaled 5,374 points in the heptathlon at the Western Athletic Conference Championship two weeks ago, earned enough points to earn an automatic invitation. Freshman Emily Sheppard will have to wait for an at-large selection with her Top 12 finish in Friday's high jump. The NCAA Championship is June 7-10, in Sacramento, Calif.
