FRESNO, Calif. - Jordan McPherson and the Wolfpack proved to be too much for the Rainbow Wahine, as Nevada captured the WAC Championship with a 7-0 win. McPherson threw every pitch of Nevada's six games, including the three games today. She shut out Hawai`i in a complete game effort. Hawai`i's
Justine Smethurst took the loss. Nevada will get the WAC's automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.
For the second straight game, the Wolfpack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Sarah Hunt walked with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Stockstill. Then Katie Stith drove her home with a base hit to left to go up, 1-0.
In the top of the third, they mounted a furious two out rally. Brittany Lorenzen started things off with a single. The next batter, Candice Rainwater hit a ground ball to right. Tanisha Milca tried to get her out at first, but Rainwater beat out the throw. Sarah Hunt was then walked to load the bases for Katie Stockstill who cleared the bases with a double to the right-centerfield gap to push Nevada's lead to 4-0.
In the fourth, they got another two out run when Brittany Puzey hit double to right to score Elkins who had reached earlier on a walk to extend their lead to 5-0 with three to go.
In the top of the sixth, Nevada extended its lead when Puzey and Brittany Lorenzen both had RBI singles to go up 7-0 with an inning-and-a-half to play.
McPherson got stronger as the game went on. She struck out three of the last six batters including the final out of the game.
It was the final game for two Rainbow Wahine, pitcher Paula Blanning and catcher Kristi Yoshizawa. Blanning threw the final inning, giving up only one hit and striking out two in her final appearance.
