HONOLULU - For the second consecutive day, a University of Hawai`i athlete won gold at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship, Friday, at Cooke Field. Freshman
Emily Sheppard took first in the high jump with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 5-8.75.
Junior Mallory Gilbert won bronze in the high jump after clearing 5-6.5, one day after a fifth place showing in the heptathlon. The two UH athletes scored 16 team points, giving the Rainbow Wahine sixth place with 30 team points heading into the final day of competition.
In the 400m hurdles, freshman Thalia Amanakis and sophomore Candace Rosenthal qualified to Saturday's finals. Amanakis had the day's fourth best time of 1:02.46 while Rosenthal ran a personal best 1:04.27.
Senior Nicole Wright, competing in her final meet as a Rainbow Wahine, ran a personal best 15.13 seconds in the 100m hurdles.
On Thursday, sophomore Annett Wichmann won gold in the heptathlon, the first UH athlete to win the event at the WAC Championship.
Sheppard is the third UH athlete to qualify for the NCAA West Regionals this season. Sophomore Meghan Weaver and Patricia Gauthier have already made standard and will compete in the West Regionals, in Provo, Utah, in two weeks.
Idaho leads the women's competition with 47 points followed by Louisiana Tech (43), Utah State (40), Nevada (37), New Mexico State (32), Hawai`i (30), Boise State (25), and Fresno State (19).
The WAC Championship concludes on Saturday with a full day of competition beginning at 12:00 p.m.
