Weaver Qualifies For NCAA Regional In Hammer

LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of Hawai`i sophomore Meghan Weaver made NCAA Regional standard in her third event this season after her performance in the hammer throw at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, Friday, at Triton Stadium. Weaver previously qualified in the discus and shot put at last week's Cal State Los Angeles Twilight Open.

Weaver's throw of 180-4 smashed her previous personal best by 16 feet and placed her 12th in the field. In all, 14 athletes cleared the regional standard of 177-8. Weaver's previous high throw was 164-0 set at the Stanford Invitational last month.

The London, Ontario native will compete in the discus and shot put, Saturday, on Day 2 of the Triton Invitational along with freshman Nicole Awaa. Weaver is one of two UH athletes to qualify for the NCAA West Regional, May 26-27, in Provo, Utah. Junior Patricia Gauthier made standard in the pole vault for the second consecutive year.

As a freshman last season, Weaver qualified in the shot put and placed eighth at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Ore.

Leslie Croons, who competed unattached, won the event with a throw of 212-9.
