Wichmann Pulls Out; Gilbert 24th At Cal Invite Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - Day one heptathlon leader Annett Wichmann of the Hawai`i women's track and field team pulled out of the final day of the California Invitational Multi-Events, Thursday, after coming down with an overnight virus. Wichmann was not able to complete the event, won by Michigan's Bettie Wade, who finished with 5,147 points.

Rainbow Wahine sophomore Mallory Gilbert placed 24th overall with a season-best score of 4,049 points. The Clovis, Calif. native placed 14th in the javelin (102-11), 15th in the long jump (16-10.75), and 27th in the 800m. Her long jump mark was a new personal best.

On Wednesday, Wichmann set four UH heptathlon records en route to a 10-point lead over Wade. The Jena, Germany native was on pace to become the first UH athlete to earn an NCAA provisional mark in the event.

The star-studded field included athletes from programs such as UCLA, Michigan, and Washington. The remainder of the UH squad is competing at the Mt. SAC Relays, which runs until Friday. Results will be posted later tonight.
