UH's Wichmann Leads Cal Invite Heptathlon After Day 1

AZUSA, Calif. - University of Hawai`i sophomore Annett Wichmann leads the heptathlon after day one of the California Invitational Multi-Events, Wednesday, at Cougar Stadium. Wichmann set four UH heptathlon records en route to a score of 3,193 points.

Wichmann, who leads Michigan's Bettie Wade by 10 points, broke school marks she set earlier this year in the 100m hurdles (14.91), 200m (26.47), shot put (45-7.25), and point total. The Jena, Germany native had the day's best mark in the shot put, tied for third in the high jump (5-5), placed fifth in the 100m hurdles and 10th in the 200m.

Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine was sophomore Mallory Gilbert. The Clovis, Calif. native is in 22nd place after scoring 2,510 points. Gilbert tied for third in the high jump (5-5), placed 17th in the shot put (32-8.25), 26th in the 100m hurdles (16.43), and 28th in the 200m (29.39).

The star-studded field includes athletes from programs such as UCLA, Michigan, and Washington. The event concludes on Thursday with the long jump, javelin, and 800m events. Wichmann is on pace to break her own event record of 4,960 points, she set last month. In addition, Wichmann will likely eclipse the NCAA provisional mark of 5,000 points, becoming the first UH athlete to accomplish that feat.

The rest of the team is competing at the Cal State Los Angeles Twilight Open, Wednesday. Results will be posted later in the day.
