Rainbow Wahine Outdoor Season With Sunset Series # 5

HONOLULU - Braving inclement weather conditions, the Hawai'i women's track and field team began its outdoor season with the fifth of nine Sunset Series Meets at Cooke Field, Saturday.

While the weather conditions made things difficult, the Rainbow Wahine still managed to walk away from the competition with a good start.

"We are coming off a successful indoor season," head coach Carmyn James said, "and we are now looking to repeat our success in the outdoor."

The most notable performance came from freshman Emily Sheppard, who matched her season best performance of 5-9 (1.75m) in the high jump. The mark surpassed the NCAA Regional standard, howeve,r due to NCAA rules, the mark will not count.

"Emily had three great attempts at 1.80m (5-10.75)," James said, "and she looks ready to take off."

In the hammer throw, sophomore Meghan Weaver threw a season-best of 154-2 (46.99m) narrowly missing a lifetime best by an inch.

In the end, the Rainbow Wahine ended the day with 11 personal bests and an unofficial regional qualifying standard. UH will look forward to next week when they compete at home at Sunset Meet #6 before hitting the road for a series of meets in California.
