BERKELEY, Calif. - University of Hawai`i sophomore
Annett Wichmann is in third place after Day 1 of the heptathlon at the Cal Multi-Events, Wednesday, at Edwards Stadium. The Jena, Germany native set a new UH record for Day 1 points with 3,059, breaking the old mark of 3,034, she set at the Northridge Multi-Events two weeks ago.
Also participating for the Rainbow Wahine was sophomore Mallory Gilbert, who stands in 17th place. Both Wichmann and Gilbert will not compete in Day 2 of the heptathlon as they are preparing for the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
"Our intent was for Annett and Mallory to only compete on Day 1 to get the feeling of participating in the hep," UH head coach Carmyn James said. "We want to rest them up for their other events at the Stanford Invitational. They'll have another chance to compete in the hep at Azusa Pacific in two weeks."
Wichmann also tied a school heptathlon record for the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.14 seconds and had the day's top throw in the shot put (42-10.25). In the other events, she tied for the second-best mark (5-5.25) in the high jump and clocked 27.15 seconds in the 200m. The sophomore trails first day leader Liz Roehrig of Minnesota (3,355) and Cal's Artenisa Young (3,082).
Gilbert tied for the day's second-best mark in the high jump (5-5.25). The Clovis, Calif. native ran 16.54 seconds in the 100m hurdles and 29.64 seconds in the 200m and threw 31-9 in the shot put.
The Multi-Events conclude on Thursday with the long jump, javelin, and 800m events without both UH athletes. The rest of the squad will participate at the two-day Stanford Invitational beginning Friday, April 1.
