HONOLULU - University of Hawai'i Athletics Director Herman Frazier announced today the hiring of Carl Clapp as Associate Athletic Director for Administrative Services. With more than 25 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, both as an administrator and a coach, Clapp fills the vacancy left by the departure of Tom Sadler in September 2005.

Clapp will oversee the internal, day-to-day operations of the department, including ticketing and facilities management and the supervision of the men's volleyball, baseball, softball and cross-country programs.

"I believe the University of Hawaii has been very fortunate to attract someone with Carl's ability and experience," Frazier said. "I look forward to welcoming him to our staff."

"I am excited about the opportunity to join the University of Hawai`i and contribute to the academic and competitive success of our student-athletes," Clapp said. "As a result of the leadership of Herman Frazier and the efforts of many others, this is an exciting time to be at UH and I look forward to joining the team."

Clapp has held positions at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. He has served as the Athletics Director at three schools including Avila College, University of Redlands, and Saint Mary's College of California.

Clapp enjoyed tremendous success at his most recent stop, serving as Athletics Director at Saint Mary's College of California since 2000. In his six years at Saint Mary's, Clapp implemented dramatic improvements in support of the school's 14 NCAA Division I athletic programs. During his tenure Clapp hired nine of the college's 13 current head coaches. More importantly he helped bolster departmental resources, consequently increasing the number of scholarships, coaching and administrative positions and fully funded programs. He also directed several facility renovations and secured the school's first-ever apparel deal.

In a two-year span, Saint Mary's reallocated or added more than 1.5 million dollars throughout the Department of Athletics and Recreational Sports. Since March of 2004, 12 full grants-in-aid, more than $500,000 in operating budgets, and 10 full-time employment opportunities were funded.

With the increased resources available to the athletic program, SMC experienced its most successful years in school history under Clapp's leadership. In 2003 and 2004, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports recognized Saint Mary's for outstanding Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Programs. In 2004-05 the Gaels earned three at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, including men's basketball, men's golf, and women's volleyball. The women's volleyball team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and finished the year ranked 12th in the nation. Additionally, the men's rugby team advanced to the USA Rugby Round of 16 in 2005.

When Clapp was named Director of Athletics, Saint Mary's funded 76.5 scholarships in its 12 West Coast Conference sports and 92.4 scholarships throughout the department. Currently, SMC supports 94.2 full grants-in-aid in WCC sponsored sports and a total of 104.5 grants-in-aid throughout the department. Fully funded athletic programs also increased from one to six since Clapp's arrival. The six programs included men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, baseball and women's volleyball. Additionally, grants-in-aid were increased for men and women's tennis, men's golf, women's lacrosse, softball, women's cross country, and women's rowing.

In addition, Clapp helped enhance several coaching staffs. Assistant coaching positions added included: two part-time men's soccer coaches promoted to full-time; one men's basketball, one women's basketball and one women's soccer part-time positions elevated to full-time; graduate assistant positions in women's rowing and baseball elevated to full-time; the women's lacrosse part-time coach was elevated to full-time; and a graduate assistant position was added to the women's volleyball program. The administrative staff was enhanced with the allocation of two full-time administrators to support the Recreational Sports program, a full-time position was added to the Media Relations staff, and one assistant athletic training position was elevated from part-time to full-time.

In addition to the increased funding, Clapp was instrumental in the remodeling of facilities including: new floors in McKeon Pavilion and Madigan Gym and the athletic training room; new locker rooms for baseball, men's soccer, and women's soccer; enhanced office space for women's basketball, women's volleyball, men's golf, cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's lacrosse and women's rowing; sand volleyball courts on campus; a new infield at Louis Guisto Field; a bermuda grass playing surface at Garaventa Field; a new scoreboard in McKeon Pavilion; and all new equipment, a new floor and additional office space in the weight training facility.

Prior to the beginning of the 2004-05 athletic seasons, Clapp helped the school sign its first-ever department-wide athletic apparel deal. Saint Mary's inked a three-year contract with Adidas to provide athletic apparel for all 14 intercollegiate sports. Collaborative work with the College's Development Office also resulted in record levels of athletic fund-raising, ticket sales, and revenue from corporate sponsorships, including the college's first pouring rights agreement.

While at Redlands (1995-00), Clapp oversaw a 20-sport intercollegiate program for both men and women and served as Chair for the Physical Education program. He doubled the participation of women in sports programs and assisted with the planning and funding of new facilities, including an aquatics center, soccer complex, fitness center, stadium press box and hammer throw facility.

Prior to Redlands, Clapp was the Director of Athletics at Avila College in Kansas City, Missouri from 1992-95, and served as the Commissioner of the Midlands Collegiate Conference in 1994and 1995. Clapp began his career in athletics administration at Emporia State University as an Assistant Director of Athletics for External Affairs, where he provided leadership for fund-raising, marketing and promotions, sports information, and the recreational sports program from 1988-1992.

Additionally, he served as an assistant football coach at Emporia State, as well as at Santa Barbara Community College, Arizona, Arizona State, and Wichita State before moving into athletic administration.

Clapp earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1981. He earned his master's degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1985 and completed additional graduate work in higher education policy and leadership at the University of Kansas from 1990-92.
