No. 9 Hawai`i Loses Heartbreaker To Loyola Marymount

HONOLULU - One of UH's most impressive streaks came to a close as the No. 9 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (6-6) fell to the Loyola Marymount Lions (11-1) 26-30, 30-26, 29-31, 30-23 and 13-15, ending their 205-match winning streak against unranked opponents, in front of a crowd of 6,571 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sarah Mason had 26 kills and 15 digs to lead UH. Kanoe Kamana`o ended up with 62 assists, 15 digs and five blocks while Ashley Watanabe ended up with 31 assists and three aces. Victoria Prince added 12 kills and eight blocks while Susie Boogaard hit .346 with 10 kills, 15 digs, three aces and four blocks.

After a kill by Mason, UH gave up six-straight points to go down 6-1. LMU kept their lead at 10-4 before a huge 10-2 run by the Rainbow Wahine put UH up 14-12. From there, it went back and forth with the score tied at 24. LMU scored three-straight to take control before winning game one 30-26.

Hawai`i responded in game two. After falling behind 20-28, UH ran off six of the next eight points to take a lead at 24-22. The Rainbow Wahine used another three-point run en route to a 30-26 victory in game two.

UH looked in control in game three, going up 15-11 on consecutive aces by Alicia Arnott. But the Lions came right back, tying it at 19 and 24 before taking their first lead since 5-4 at 27-26. Hawai`i got to game-point at 29-28, but LMU ran off three-straight points, as a Heather Hughes kill gave the Lions a 31-29 game three victory.

A fired up Rainbow Wahine squad took control early in game four, taking a 12-5 edge. After allowing LMU to get back within two at 13-11, UH ran off five more points, going up 18-11. They never really looked back again in the game, winning 30-23.

Hawai`i looked dominant at the start of game five, taking a 5-0 lead. But LMU fought back again, cutting it to 8-7 on a three-point run. UH scored two points on a kill by Arnott and a block by Boogaard and Kari Gregory, before Christianna Reneau had three-straight kills to start a 4-0 LMU run, giving them their first lead at 11-10. Both teams traded sideouts, giving the Lions match point at 14-13 before Hughes put away her match-high 29th kill to end it at 15-13.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center, preceded by the alumnae match at 5 p.m.
