HONOLULU - The No. 6 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (5-4) fell to the No. 2 Washington Huskies (8-0) 18-30, 24-30 and 28-30 in front of a crowd of 8,056 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
Hawai`i was led by Victoria Prince, who hit .316 with nine kills and six blocks. Juliana Sanders added eight kills, three blocks and a .368 hitting percentage while Kanoe Kamana`o ended the night with 34 assists and 14 digs. Ashley Watanabe had 13 digs in the back row.
The start of the match was an omen of things to come as UW scored the firs four points. UH was able to rally to get within one at 6-5, but a huge 7-0 run in the middle of the game sealed Hawai`i's fate. Washington won game one 30-18 on the strength of five aces and a .412 hitting percentage.
The Huskies again took control early on, taking a big 18-11 lead. Their advantage got as high as 28-21 before two kills by Sarah Mason sparked a three-point run to get it to 28-24. But Washington regained their composure and scored the last two points to take game two 30-24.
Hawai`i looked like a whole different team in game three. The two teams battled their way to 13 ties before a big 5-0 run by the Rainbow Wahine put them up 18-14. Washington responded quickly, taking a 20-19 lead on a 6-1 run. It stayed tight with UW getting to 28-26 on a kill by Brie Hagerty. But UH answered right back with points on a kill by Tara Hittle and a block by Sanders and Kamana`o. But after a timeout, UW's Christal Morrison got a kill before Courtney Thompson dumped to end the match with a 30-28 UW win in game three.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The UH Athletics Department is promoting tomorrow's match as a WHITE OUT, asking fans to wear white to the arena.
