HONOLULU - San Jose State (33-24, 7-7 WAC) broke Hawai`i's 10-game win streak with a 3-2 victory over the Rainbow Wahine (30-21, 11-5 WAC). After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, SJSU's senior ace Carol Forbes shut down the Rainbow Wahine, retiring 12 in a row at one point. She spaced two more singles for the rest of the game, but no UH runner made it to second base.
Hawai`i started the game well, posting two runs in the bottom of the first. Denise Dahlberg reached on a fielding error on the shortstop. With Kaulana Gould up at the plate, Dahlberg moved to second on a wild pitch. Then Gould hit a single that rolled into rightfield that scored Dahlberg from second. Next up, Tyleen Tausaga hit another single to rightfield that allowed Gould to go to second. UH then executed a double steal, but an errant throw by the catcher bounced into leftfield and Gould sprinted home for Hawaii's second run.
In the top of the third, San Jose State battled back, notching two runs to knot the score at 2-2. The Spartans were able to get four singles in the inning, with the big blow coming off the bat of Elisa Barrios. With the bases loaded and two outs, Barrios was able to hit a sharp single up the middle to score Kasey Igarta and Courtney Lewis from second and third. But on the play, Barrios tried to advance to second when the throw went home, but ended up being tagged out by Ashley Ruff for the third out of the inning.
SJSU took the lead in the top of the fourth when Carlie Hill lined what proved to be the winning home run over the centerfield fence, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Spartans.
Senior pitcher Shannon Tabion (9-5) took the loss for Hawai`i throwing 7.0 innings, giving up 10 hits, three earned runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
Hawai`i will now take on SJSU in the second game of today's doubleheader. It is senior night at the ballpark in which Melissa Coogan, Denise Dahlberg, Noelle Izumi, Shannon Tabion, and Tracie Uchima will play their last game at RWSS.
