HONOLULU -
Kaulana Gould hit a two-out, walk off single, scoring
Tracie Uchima from second in the bottom of the eighth to defeat San Jose State 2-1. It was a pitcher's duel between
Melissa Coogan (15-9) and SJSU's ace Carol Forbes (21-18). Forbes retired the first 10 batters in a row, while Coogan settled down to retire 19 of 20 batters from the second through the eighth innings. The win extends UH's win streak to 10.
San Jose State (32-24. 6-7 WAC) scored first in the top of the second inning. SJSU third baseman Kristy Ballinger led the inning off by hitting her first home run of the season over the centerfield fence. But that was the only run the Spartans would be able to score in the game.
After the home run, Coogan and the Rainbow Wahine (30-20, 11-5 WAC) settled down to retire the next 19 of 20 batters. The one SJSU player in that span reached safely on a bunt single, but was thrown out on a smooth double-play turned by first baseman Tyleen Tausaga to shortstop Ashley Ruff to the covering second baseman Noelle Izumi.
Forbes, SJSU's pitcher kept the Rainbow Wahine off-balance with an arsenal of pitches, keeping Hawai`i's offensive attack at bay. She took a perfect game into the fourth inning before walking Gould on four straight pitches. Forbes still had a no-hitter going into the sixth, before Tara Harbert broke the hitless game with an infield single.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Gould smashed a double to the right-centerfield fence. With first open, Tausaga stepped to the plate and ripped a single to center, to score Gould from second just ahead of the tag from SJSU's catcher to tie the game at 1-1.
Then, in the bottom of the eighth, the Rainbow Wahine's bats came alive. Tracie Uchima reached on an unconventional fielder's choice. The Spartan's' leftfielder misplayed Uchima's fly ball, but was able to force Harbert, who had reached on an infield bunt single, out at second. That left UH with two outs and a runner on first. Denise Dahlberg beat out a throw from the shortstop for an infield single. With runners on first and second, Gould stepped to the plate and promptly smacked an opposite field single down the leftfield line to score a racing Uchima easily from second for the win.
Gould led Hawai`i's offense, going 2-3 with a double, a run scored, and the game-winning RBI and Harbert was 2-3. For SJSU, Ballinger was 1-3 with the home run and Jana Arde was 2-4.
The win extends Hawai`i's win streak to 10 with only two games left in the season.
It's senior night tomorrow, as the two teams will face each other again tomorrow afternoon in a crucial WAC doubleheader starting at 2 pm. Seniors Melissa Coogan, Denise Dahlberg, Noelle Izumi, Shannon Tabion, and Tracie Uchima will bid aloha after playing four years together.
The first 200 fans will receive a team photo, courtesy of the UH Federal Credit Union.
