Murray Shatters Hammer Throw Record at Steve Scott Invite

IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Novelle Murray broke her own University of Hawai`i record in the hammer throw with a spectacular throw of 57.44m (188-5) at the UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational, Saturday, at Anteater Stadium. Murray's throw was nearly six and a half feet farther than her record toss of 55.70m set at last week's Triton Invitational.

The junior's throw marked the second time this season she eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard in the hammer. Murray finished third in the event and also posted Top 10 finishes in the shot put and discus on Saturday. She threw 12.73m (41-9.25) in the shot and 52.28m (171-06) in the discus, the ninth time she surpassed the NCAA Regional qualifying mark.

Murray led a UH contingent of eight athletes at the meet, which featured numerous collegiate and international competitors. Also reaching the NCAA Regional standard in her event was sophomore Patricia Gauthier, who tied her lifetime best in the pole vault. Gauthier leaped 3.80m (12-5.5) to finish in a tie for third. She also ran the 100m dash and clocked in at 12.73 seconds.

In the javelin, senior Lana Phillips threw a lifetime best of 36.88m (121-0), breaking her old mark of 35.37m, which she accomplished as a sophomore. Phillips also competed in the 100m hurdles and posted a time of 16.50 seconds.

Other UH athletes who participated in the meet were sophomore Ku'ulei Karratti (100m, hammer), sophomore Ashley Monfort (800m), sophomore Candace Rosenthal (400m hurdles), and senior Alexis Fredrick (shot put, discus, hammer).

The Rainbow Wahine return home to host the final meet of its All-Comer series and the UH Heptathlon, Monday and Tuesday at Cooke Field.
