DES MOINES, Iowa - Sophomore
Kelly Young participated in two relays teams for the Hawai`i women's track and field team, Saturday, on the final day of the 96th Drake Relays at Drake Stadium. In both relays, Young brought the Rainbow Wahine to the front of the fields, including the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay in which UH broke the school record by 22 seconds.
In the sprint relay, Young anchored the team, which consisted of freshman Bianca DeBartolo, sophomore Jessica Rohr and senior Tasha Monroe. UH finished third and Young ran a 2:09.9 split to help the Rainbow Wahine clock in at 3:57.92. The relay team shattered the previous record of 4:20.80 set earlier this year.
Later in the day, Young ran the second leg of the 4x800 relay team. Despite the team's ninth place finish and 9:02.42 mark, Young brought the sellout crowd of 18,000 to its feet with her performance. After taking the baton from sophomore Dana Buchanan, Young brought UH from 30 meters behind to the lead following her spectacular 2:05 split in which she tracked down All-American Lindsay Gallo of Michigan.
Sophomores Heather Scott and Sheena Thain ran the third and anchor legs for UH. Still the team's time ranked second in school history and was one second from the all-time record.
Monroe also participated in the long jump and posted a 5.83m leap. Buchanan ran the 1500m and finished eighth in a time of 4:32.99.
The prestigious Drake Relays sold out for the 40th consecutive year.
