Rainbow Wahine Track Speed Up At All-Comers 7

HONOLULU - With trade winds gusting and rain sprinkling the Manoa campus, the Hawai'i women's track and field team successfully completed its seventh All-Comers meet this weekend at Cooke Field. The Rainbow Wahine turned their eyes toward speed as they gear up for a 12-day road trip through California beginning next weekend.

The meet featured the first clash between junior Tasha Monroe and sophomore Kelly Young in the 400m. Monroe (56.46) edged Young (57.37) but each posted lifetime bests and both recorded UH Top 10 all-time performances in the event. In addition, Monroe's time was the fastest in the Western Athletic Conference this season and Young's time was third-best.

Meanwhile Young made her 400m hurdle debut (1:02.29) and recorded the WAC's top time this season easily besting teammate Jessica Rohr's time of 1:04.48 at the Northridge Invitational.

In the 100m, Monroe won the event with her best season effort (12.04), a time which ranks fourth in the WAC this season. Sophomore Patricia Gauthier ran 12.66, which also ranks in the Top 10 among WAC runners.

In other events, Gauthier won top pole vault honors with jump of 3.65m. Junior Novelle Murray won both the discus (47.00m) and hammer throw (49.86m) while freshman Meghan Weaver had the day's best shot put throw (13.15m).

The meet was the largest attended of the season with three international club teams from Alberta, Canada competing. The series of eight local All-Comer Meets is hosted by UH to help develop and prepare the Rainbow Wahine for upcoming mainland competitions. It also services the needs of local athletes and programs to develop the sport in the state.

The Rainbow Wahine open the 12-day road trip with UCLA's Rafer Johnson Invitational, April 7-8.
