DES MOINES, Iowa - Freshman
Bianca DeBartolo was the lone Hawai`i track and field athlete to participate on Day 1 of the Drake Relays, Wednesday, at Drake Stadium. Competing in mid-50 degree weather, DeBartolo totaled 2,675 points in the heptathlon and stands in 20th place with one day of competition remaining.
The Bondi, New South Wales native, posted a UH heptathlon record in the 100m hurdles, finishing in a time of 15.14 seconds. DeBartolo broke the previous record of 15.38 seconds which she set earlier this month. In addition, she recorded the third farthest shot put throw, heaving 10.95m (35-11.25).
The day's other heptathlon events included the high jump and 200m dash, in which DeBartolo posted marks of 1.45m and 27.21 seconds, respectively. The heptathlon concludes on Thursday with the long jump, javelin, and 800m run events. Wichita State's Iveta Grunte leads the competition after Day 1 with 3,278 points.
A full field of events continues over the next three days. Other UH athletes participating at the Drake Relays are sophomore Kelly Young (800m), sophomore Dana Buchanan (1500m), junior Tasha Monroe (relays), sophomore Jessica Rohr (relays), sophomore Sheena Thain (relays), and sophomore Heather Scott (relays).
