LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior
Novelle Murray continued her impressive showing at the Triton Invitational with a new school record in the discus of 54.24m (177-11). Murray, the two-time defending Western Athletic Conference champion in the event, topped the previous mark by more than six feet set by Joan Gago in 1983.
Murray's toss also marks the farthest throw among WAC athletes this season and the eighth time she eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard. On Friday's opening day of the Triton Invitational, Murray broke the school record in the hammer throw with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 54.04m (182-9).
Freshman Meghan Weaver threw 43.78m (143-8) while junior Alexis Fredrick tossed a lifetime best 40.41m (132-7). In the shot put, Weaver heaved 14.67m (48-1.75) to finish sixth. Murray tossed 12.12m (39-9.25) and Fredrick set another personal best with a throw of 11.64m (38-2.25).
The meet drew more than 1,300 athletes to the Triton Track and Field Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine only entered the three athletes. The rest of the team will participate in two events in the coming week - the Drake Relays in Iowa and Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
