Young Latest UH Athlete to Qualify for NCAA Regionals

WALNUT, Calif. - The Hawai`i women's track and field team concluded its 12-day road trip at the Mt. SAC Relays, Sunday, at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mt. San Antonio Community College. Sophomore Kelly Young posted an NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 400m hurdles with a lifetime best time of 59.84 seconds.

Young, who already qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the 800m, is the first multi-event qualifier for the Rainbow Wahine this season. Other UH track athletes advancing to the Regionals are Novelle Murray (discus), Meghan Weaver (shot put), Patricia Gauthier (pole vault), and Tasha Monroe (long jump).

Young was runner-up to Meka Rembert-Thompson, who ran attached, and clocked in at 59.41 seconds. Sophomore Jessica Rohr finished 23rd with a time of 1:04.76.

Weaver captured the shot put title in the University/Open division with a lifetime best throw of 14.68m (48-2). Weaver's throw bettered her previous high of 14.66m, an NCAA Regional qualifying mark set at Friday's Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Friday. Her throw was the third time this season that she eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard.

Monroe competed in both the 100m and 200m events. The UH speedster recorded a season-best of 24.41 seconds in the 200m despite finishing in a tie for 21st. Monroe also tied for 13th in the 100m (12.07).

Over the past week and a half, the Rainbow Wahine competed in six different meets throughout California. Three athletes recorded NCAA Regional qualifying marks and numerous lifetime and personal bests were established.

UH returns to Honolulu before returning to the mainland for the Triton Invitational, Drake Relays, and Steve Scott Invitational, beginning April 22.
