Freshman DeBartolo Sets School-Record in Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - University of Hawai`i freshman Bianca DeBartolo set a school-record in the heptathlon by tallying 4,559 points during the two-day California Invitational Heptathlon, which ended on Thursday at the Azusa Pacific campus. For DeBartolo, the event marked her first career heptathlon as a Rainbow Wahine.

The Bondi, NSW, Australia native, finished in eighth place and broke the previous mark of 4,284 points held by Nicole Kaffka in 2002. UCLA's Nastassja Hall rallied to win the event with an NCAA Regional qualifying score of 5,191 points. First day leader Katie Lloyd of Colorado State accumulated 5,130 points and also qualified for the NCAA Regionals.

On Thursday, DeBartolo set a lifetime best in the javelin with a throw of 38.82m (127-4), which was the day's best mark and out-distanced the next closest competitor by nearly three feet. She also finished sixth in the long jump (5.27m, 17-3.5) and 16th in the 800m run (2:42.46).

For the week, DeBartolo recorded two lifetime bests (shot put and javelin) and four season best marks (high jump, 200m, 800m, and heptathlon). In addition, she set school heptathlon individual event records in the 100m hurdles (15.38), javelin, and Day 2 point total (1,824).

The rest of the Rainbow Wahine track team will participate in two events on Friday, the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays. On Saturday, the team will enter the Long Beach State Invitational and will conclude its 12-day road trip at the Mt. SAC Relays on Sunday.
