Hawai`i Comes Back To Sweep Tulsa, 5-3

Hawai`i (23-20, 4-5 WAC) swept Tulsa (21-25, 2-4 WAC) with a 5-3 comeback win in the final game of a three-game WAC series at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. With Tulsa leading the game in the top of the seventh 3-1, Ashley Ruff came through with a clutch two-out, two-run triple to tie the game. Later in the same inning, Dena DePompa hit a ground ball to the second, but a wild throw allowed the winning and insurance runs to cross the plate, making the score 5-3 in favor of Hawai'i.

Kate Robinson (3-2, 1-1 WAC) got the win in relief of Melissa Coogan. Robinson went 4.1 innings and gave up one run on five hits while walking only one batter. Tulsa battled hard throughout the game, they were able to get at least two runners on in every inning except the seventh. The Golden Hurricane broke a string of 27 consecutive scoreless innings when Lindsey Tower scored off a Angela Osbon double to right-centerfield.

The Rainbow Wahine posted the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. UH loaded the bases on a single by Denise Dahlberg, a walk to Tyleen Tausaga, and a fielder's choice off a ground ball hit by Louise Harriden. Ruff then drew a walk to force Dahlberg home.

After the first inning, Hawaii had runners on in every inning but the third, couldn't produce any runs until the last inning. The rally started when Kaulana Gould reached on a walk. Tyleen Tausaga followed with a single deep in the hole. Jennifer Hackett went in to pinch run for Tausaga. Two batters later, Ruff hit her base-clearing triple. Noelle Izumi was then hit by a pitch, then promptly stole second. With runners now on second and third, DePompa hit a ground ball to the second baseman who threw right past the first baseman, thus allowing both Ruff and Izumi to score.

Dahlberg was 2-4 with a run scored; Tara Harbert was 3-4; and Ruff had the triple, three RBI, and a run scored.

Tulsa scored single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings. For the game, four of Tulsa's hits were doubles to the gaps. Julie Fennel took the loss for Tulsa, dropping her record to 6-12 on the season. Fennel threw 6.2 innings, giving up the five runs, on eight hits, with five walks, and seven strike outs.

For the Rainbow Wahine, it was the first sweep of a WAC team since they took a four-game series against UTEP last year (4/2-4/4/04). Hawaii will now travel to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP for a three-game series this Friday and Saturday
