UH Ends Tourney With Win Over St. Mary's

STANFORD, Calif. - The Rainbow Wahine softball team picked up its 20th win today in their final game of The Stanford Classic at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. UH (20-17, 1-2 WAC) defeated St. Mary's 8-0 (six innings). Kate Robinson picked up her second win of the season and Kaulana Gould had a pair of two-run singles to lead Hawai'i over the Gaels. Kelly Harrison took the loss for St. Mary's (5-24).

Hawai'i wasted no time in getting numbers posted on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first, UH broke out of the gates scoring four runs. Tracie Uchima and Noelle Izumi were both driven home by a Kaulana Gould single. Later, Ashley Ruff picked up an RBI driving in Tyleen Tausaga from second with a single of her own. Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Gould to make the score 4-0 going into the second inning.

UH added two more runs in the fifth when Izumi led off the inning with a double to the left-center gap. Denise Dahlberg followed with a walk, moving Izumi to second. After an infield single by Tausaga loaded the bases, Gould hit a shot up the middle, allowing Izumi and Dahlberg to score to make the score 6-0.

Pinch hitter Dena DePompa led off the bottom of the sixth with a sharp single up between third and short. Pinch hitter Alana Power then hit a double down the leftfield line that scored DePompa from first. Izumi followed with a looping hit to leftfield that scored Power to end the game with the eight-run mercy rule.

Izumi was 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI; Gould was 2-2 with a walk, a run, and four RBI; and Power had a double.

On the mound, Robinson threw the complete game, her first career shut-out, giving up six hits, with three walks and two strike outs.

Hawai'i will now return home and face WAC rival and defending champion Fresno State in a three-game series on April 1st and 2nd. It will be "Youth League Ticket Bonanza" at the softball games. The first 100 youth league softball players (13 years old and under), who wear their team jersey when attending one of the UH softball team's WAC games against Fresno State, will receive a free ticket to one of the baseball team's contests against Rice, April 15-17. Fresno State is the defending WAC champion in softball, while Rice is the defending WAC champion in baseball. Admission to UH softball games is free.
