STANFORD, Calif. - The UH softball team dropped its second game today, falling 4-2 to UNLV. Hawaii is now 19-17; 1-3 in the tournament.
Hawaii jumped in front early, scoring one run in the second inning. Tyleen Tausaga hit her ninth double of the year to lead off the second inning. Two batters later Ashley Ruff laid down a bunt that was fielded cleanly, but thrown over the covering second baseman, allowing Tausaga to score from second.
UNLV responded in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs. Amber Campbell reached on a single, and was soon driven home on a triple that was hit to deep centerfield by Marissa Nichols. Nichols later scored on a first-and-third play.
The Rainbow Wahine scored again in the fourth inning to knot the score at 2-2. Tausaga again led the inning off with a hit. Tara Harbert entered as a pinch runner and was moved to third on a fielding error off a Kaulana Gould sacrifice bunt, and another sacrifice bunt executed by Ashley Ruff. Kate Robinson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Harbert from third. It was Robinson's eighth sac fly of the year.
But UNLV broke the tie, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan Bostwick was safe on a fielder's choice, and scored later on a Valerie Keeney single to centerfield. Rosa Ordaz proved to be the insurance run for the Rebels when she crossed the plate off of a single by Campbell.
Tausaga led Hawaii going 2-3 with a run scored.
Melissa Coogan started the game. She went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and two strike outs. Robinson came in relief for the last inning, giving up four hits, two runs with a walk. Robinson took the loss.
Hawaii will play St. Mary's tomorrow morning at 11 am in their final game of the Stanford Classic.
