Relays Rule as UH Opens First Mainland Outdoor Tour

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's track and field team set three new school relay records at the Northridge Invitational, last week. The Rainbow Wahine also had four first place finishes and two second place finishes and are off to their most productive start in school history.

"What a difference a year makes ... freshmen grown to sophomores, good incoming freshmen and leadership from within themselves," UH head coach Carmyn James said. "This team knows what it wants and it wants to be really good!"

UH relay teams took three golds and one silver in the four events it entered. The Rainbow Wahine avenged an earlier loss to Minnesota in the 4x800m relay with a thrilling victory in the Distance Medley Relay. Hawai'i also captured the 4x1600m relay and 1600m sprint relay.

In addition, the team posted top individual performances as sophomore Patricia Gauthier set a school record in the pole vault (3.70m) and freshman Meghan Weaver recorded the fifth farthest throw in the shot put (14.10m).

UH's next competition is the Stanford Invitational this coming weekend as six athletes will participate in various events (Dana Buchanan - 1500m / Novelle Murray - Discus & Hammer, Sabrina Reeve - 1500m, Meghan Weaver - Discus & Shot, Kelly Young - 800m). The majority of the team will remain in Hawai'i and prepare for an upcoming 10 day trip in April with five competitions (April 7-17).
