Hawai'i Rallies To Defeat San Diego, 8-3

Hawaii pitcher Paula Blanning came in relief and picked up her first win of the season over the San Diego Toreros, 8-3. Blanning went four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out two.

Hawaii scored first, in the top of the first. Denise Dahlberg hit a two-out double to the right-centerfield gap. The next batter Tyleen Tausaga promptly hit a single up the middle scoring Dahlberg from second base.

The Toreros came right back, taking the lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Four singles produced two runs scored by Ashlee Nunes and Kathleen Bonja. Sara Mason and Marissa Merchain had the two RBI singles. Then USD extended their lead to 3-1 when Kim Delpit drove in Merchain with an RBI single to centerfield. Merchain had hit a double to left-center in the previous at-bat.

But Hawaii fought back. They scored two runs in the fourth to knot the score at 3-3. UH then scored three more in the fifth to take the lead, 6-3, and added two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 8-3.

In the fourth, Tausaga, who reached on a walk, scored on a single by Louise Harriden to leftfield. Ashley Ruff, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a single by Kate Robinson.

Tracie Uchima, Tausaga, and Kaulana Gould all scored in the fifth inning. Tausaga drove in Uchima; Gould had her third double of the season, driving in Tausaga; and Ashley Ruff, who reached on an infield single, was able to get into a run-down between first and second, allowing Gould to score from third.

Uchima led off the top of the seventh with a double to left-center. The next batter, Noelle Izumi reached on an fielding error. Both were driven in by Tausaga's eighth double of the year.

Hawaii's Uchima went 2-3 and scored two runs; Tausaga was 3-3, had a double, scored a run and had four RBI; Dahlberg hit a double and scored a run; and Kaulana Gould hit a run-scoring double.

For San Diego, Nunes was 2-4; Bonja was 2-4 with a run scored; Mason 2-4 with an RBI; and Merchain was 2-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

San Diego 4, Loyola Marymount 3 In a battle between Pacific Coast Conference foes, it was the Loyola Marymount Lions came back to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the San Diego Toreros, 4-3. The Lions had four hits in their three-run inning, including a home run and a double. They were able to score the winning run with two outs.

LMU's Kayla Meeks went the full seven innings on the mound, spacing four hits, giving up three runs on two walks and three strike outs. LMU had three errors that cost them two unearned runs. Meeks also hit the two-run home run in the three run sixth inning.

For San Diego, Erin Harmonson pitched the complete game giving up the four runs, on 10 hits, walking six with two strikeouts. Kathleen Bonja led the Toreros going 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Loyola Marymount's Lisa Abbot went 2-3 for the game with a run scored; Brittany Bassett was 3-3 with a run and an RBI; Casie Phillips and Tracy Cook both hit doubles to leftfield.

Winthrop 8, Eastern Illinois 1
Janiva Willis helped lead the Winthrop Eagles over the Eastern Illinois Panthers. She led the game off with a double to the left-center gap, and on the day, she was 2-2 with two runs scored. On the mound, Shahna Ashard fired a two-hitter in the victory, giving up the one run, walking five and striking out four.

Eight of nine Eagle starters had at least one base hit, but the one player that didn't get a hit, Stephanie Turney, scored two runs for Winthrop after reaching safely on a fielding error and a walk. Katie Kipisz had a double over the centerfielder and scored a run; Turney was 2-3; and Hilary Peacock had a three-run double down the leftfield line.

The Eagles finished the tournament at 3-3 and the Panthers went 0-6.

Eastern Illinois 1, Miami 4
The Miami RedHawks clinched the 2005 Bank of Hawaii Invitational Title with a win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 4-1. RedHawks' pitcher Jackie Poggendorf got the win, going five innings, giving up one run with no walks and four strikeouts. She picked up her second win of the tournament, and Courtney Salmon picked up her second save of the tourney.

EIU scored first, in the fourth inning to take the lead. Katy Steele scored off of a Chelsea Adams double to the right-center gap. Adams was the only Panther with multiple-hits for the game, going 2-3. Cassandra North had a double leftfield in the fifth inning.

Miami came storming back in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, including four consecutive hits by Christine Bills, Halle Popson, Poggendorf, and Jessica Moore who all eventually scored. The bib blow was the two-run single that Moore hit.
